Second Edition of the Italian Machine Tool Technology Award Winners Announced
We are pleased to announce the winners of the Second Italian Machine Tool Technology Awards (IMTTA). Eric Stoner of Kettering University (www.kettering.edu), Adrian Teo of Arizona State (www.asu.edu) and Jonathan Bailey of Cal Polytechnic (www.calpoly.edu) were selected as the students with the best papers and were awarded a one-week trip to Italy which took place June 22 – 28, 2008 with visits to the following top Italian companies in the machine tool industry.

The trip included visits to the Silmax Museum of Italian Machine Tool History, University of Brescia’s Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department (www.unibs.it) and the Lamborghini Factory and Museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese (www.lamborghiniregistry.com/Factory) as well as cultural tours of the cities.
The students were accompanied by professors Mr. Robert Chalou (Michigan State University www.msu.edu) and Mr. Trian M. Georgeou (Arizona State University www.asu.edu). The student, Jonathan Bailey of Cal Polytechnic, will be conducting an internship with an Italian company later this year as he was unavailable for the June trip.
Faculty participation provides the academics with a noteworthy opportunity to experience and learn about Italian metalworking technology and to enhance their programs by sharing such experiences upon their return to the classroom.
The Italian Trade Commission, UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers will host an awards ceremony for this year’s participants at the “Sixth Italian Machine Tool Conference Dinner” held during the International Machinery and Technology Show (IMTS) 2008 in Chicago on September 10th, 2008 at the Harold Washington Library Center’s Winter Garden.
